Abrasion is the wear of material on a rubber surface due to the action of an abrasive surface in contact and moving with respect to the rubber surface. It is measured under a specific load, at a specific speed and type of abrasive surface. Abortive tests may not predict service life, because many complex factors the abrasion that affects varies greatly from one application to another. | |
The National Basic Standards Opener (NBS) is a frequently used abrasion tester. The test samples are pressed under a specific load against a rotating drum covered with abrasive paper. The number of revolutions of the drum required to abrade a specific thickness of the test sample is recorded and compared to the number of revolutions required to abrade the same thickness of a standard reference material (ASTM D 1630). In the Taber Abrader (or Abraser) test, weight loss or loss of thickness is measured. The specimen is placed in contact with an abrasive wheel under a load of 500 or 1000 g (ASTM D 1044). This test is usually performed on transparent plastics; However, the apparatus has also been used with rubber. |
