The Vicat softening temperature is the temperature at which a flat-tipped needle penetrates the sample to the depth of 1 mm under a specific load. The temperature reflects the softening point when a material is used in a high temperature application. Test procedure: A test sample is placed on the test apparatus so that the penetrating needle rests at least 1 mm from the edge. A load of 10 N or 50 N is applied to the sample. The sample is lowered to an oil bath at 23 degrees C. The bath rises at a rate of 50 ° or 120 ° C for hours until the needle penetrates 1 mm. Sample size: The test sample should be between 3 and 6.5 mm thick and at least 10 mm wide and long. You can not stack more than three layers to achieve the minimum thickness. Values: Temperature at which the needle penetrates 1 mm. The Charpy impact test is carried out more frequently according to ASTM E23, ASTM A370, ISO 148 or EN 10045-1. While the test is most commonly performed on metals, there are also a number of standards that exist for plastics and polymers, including D6110 ASTM and ISO 179. |
